Prime Cymru is an Initiative for Mature Enterprise established by HRH the Prince of Wales.  The Charity is dedicated to helping people over 50 in Wales to become economically active.  If you are in this age group and want to start your own business, develop a social enterprise, simply find a job or look at volunteering opportunities, we can help.

Economic inactivity amongst the over 50's is a critical problem for Wales. Over 160,000 people aged 50—65 in Wales are not working (34% of the total in this age group). We are developing new initiatives to persuade employers that older people's experience and skills are a valuable asset and can make a real difference to the success of Welsh businesses.

Our Aims are:

  • To encourage people of 50+ into volunteering schemes all over Wales
  • To assist people of 50+ who wish to become self employed
  • To assist people of 50+ who wish to find employment
  • To support people who are 50+ through our mentoring scheme

How we can help you?

We have a number of Mentors across the whole of Wales who are mature, trained people who volunteer their time and expertise to help you achieve your goal.

We work by giving FREE face-to-face advice, helping you shape and develop your ideas. Your adviser can also act as a mentor, supporting you as you overcome any practical and psychological barriers to starting your own business or returning to work.

MENTOR SCHEME
This project seeks to establish partnerships between people over 50 who are seeking new purpose and economic direction  in their lives and those with the professional experience, background, aptitude and skills to advise and support them on a voluntary basis.

Central to this initiative is the provision of professional  advice and support for people in this age category who wish to develop their own small business from start up to growth or, alternatively, mentored assistance in the creation of opportunities for members of this same group to develop through volunteering or employment.

PRIME-Cymru has a team of mentors available to work with people of 50 and over who feel they may benefit from support.

VOLUNTEERING SCHEMES

The Grundtvig Project - Discovering the World Anew

The main objective of the Grundtvig partnership between Wales and our 4 partnering countries - Poland, Slovaki, Spain and Turkey - is to help older people (aged 50+) to become more socially and educationally active and to exchange experiences and good practices.  It aims to achieve this goal by teaching and learning foreign languages and ITC skills (using the internet and email etc.) in order to communicate with learners in other European Countries.  By forming e-pen pal friendships our volunteers can share and exchange information about their countries, regions, traditions, religions, culture and life experiences.  Cultural exchange visits will give volunteers the opportunity to visit our partnering countries and experience their way of life, traditions and culture.

The Gruntvig Partnership
Our overseas pen pals gather together in Cardiff during our exchange visit in May 2010.

The Rural Challenge Project

This project ran from April 2008 to the end of March 2010 and helped people aged 50 plus across most regions of South, West and Mid-Wales into volunteering opportunies.  PRIME-Cymru's team of 5 co-ordinators encouraged and facilitated entry into volunteering schemes as one possible route back into economic activity. During the 2 year project we placed over 650 people into volunteering opportunities, 53 of whom went on to become economically active.

Further information on these two projects can be found under the appropriate headings.
